Just across the border from Hong Kong, on the Chinese mainland, lies the city of Shenzhen, where around 15 million people live, work and enjoy life!
After massive investment made by the Chinese central government to turn the once quiet fishing village into a special economic zone, Shenzhen now boasts the highest GDP per capita in all of China. It’s known for having a thriving stock exchange and art scene, as well as being a major domestic tourist location thanks to its gorgeous beaches, gardens and theme parks.
The city is a wonder to behold, with exquisite architecture that lights up the night sky and dazzles onlookers during the day, and an internationally renowned, efficient public transportation system.
Shenzhen is a city very welcoming to expats: with popular restaurants, cafes, fast food chains and supermarkets from various countries, and the nightlife competes with other world class cities back at home. Locations such as Coco Park, Sea World (much, much different than the one in San Diego) and Window of the World are the main hubs for social outings. Although there are many more districts with bars and restaurants spread through the city, those three areas tend to have the most activity going on at any one time.
Those with an artistic flair will be extremely satisfied with life here. The city even makes the list of UNESCO Creative Cities. Whether your passion is live music, art galleries or museums, there is something for everyone. Shenzhen is also a haven for golfers, and is home to a plethora of amazing golf clubs and courses, with some being exclusive to invited guests.
If natural beauty is more your thing, the city is also home to an extensive network of pristine parks, hiking trails, and botanical gardens. A good hike here is easy to plan.
